Alabama leads men's NCAA golf after one round

No. 2-ranked Alabama held a three-stroke lead after Tuesday's first round of the NCAA men's golf championships at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The Tide, which is trying to match the national championship won by the Alabama women last week, had a 1-over-par total of 285, with the scores of four of the team's five players counting toward the team total.

Alabama demonstrated its balance as all five of its players shot between 70 and 73.

Alabama is bidding for its first men's national golf championship. Augusta State, which won the past two national titles, failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament this year.

Florida and Auburn are tied for second at 4-over, with UCLA and Oklahoma next at 5-over.

Five teams, including No. 1-ranked Texas, are at 6-over-par after one round.

The four-day, four-round tournament concludes Friday.

Anton Arboleda of UCLA had the low individual round for the day with a 4-under-par 67.

He was one of 12 players who shot under par on Tuesday.

Tied for second at 2-under are Corey Conners of Kent State and Tyler McCumber of Florida.

Six golfers are tied at 2-under.

Jordan Spieth of Texas, the nation's No. 1-ranked player, finished the first round at 2-over.
