Justin Abdelkader will likely be getting a call from the Department of Player Safety for his hit on Brian Campbell Friday night.

The bruising Red Wings forward drove his shoulder into Campbell’s chin when he obliterated the Blackhawks defenseman with a heavy hit a few feet from the end boards.

Although some have argued the head wasn’t the principal point of contact, it’s hard to believe the league will see it that way. But this is the NHL we’re talking about, so who knows.

Trevor van Riemsdyk jumped in immediately to defend his fallen teammate, who miraculously bounced right up after the hit. Campbell did have a 423-game iron man streak going before it was snapped in late December as a result of him being a healthy scratch, so his toughness was never in doubt. But even the toughest of dudes shouldn’t be able to just shrug off a hit like that.

Abdelkader, who never hesitates to finish his checks, was given a two-minute minor for charging and a five-minute major for fighting.

The Red Wings winger shockingly only has one prior suspension in his career — which came back in the 2013 postseason — despite a highlight reel of questionable hits, but he might not be able to evade punishment on this one.
