Free agent receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins signed one-year contracts on Friday with the San Francisco 49ers after working out for the team.
The 49ers suddenly developed a need at the position when Michael Crabtree went down with a ruptured Achillies' tendon in last month and newcomer Brandon Carswell tore an ACL.
To make room on the roster for Collie and Hawkins, the 49ers waived undrafted free agent center Sherman Carter and punter Colton Schmidt.
Collie, 27, brings a history of injuries to the 49ers. Last year with the Indianapolis Colts, his season was over in Week 3 after he ruptured his right patellar tendon. while playing in only one game. Collie also has experienced problems with concussions but said neurologists have cleared him to play.
The four-year veteran has 173 catches for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns, incuding 50 or more receptions in three of the four seasons.
Hawkins, 27, had 71 receptions for 771 yards and one touchdown in five seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He was released by the Titans on May 1 and eight days later signed with the New England Patriots, who waived him on Wednesday.
