San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith practiced Saturday in a black jersey for a fourth straight day and hasn't been ruled out of Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears.
Smith left last Sunday's game with a concussion and appears on track to play this week, but the 49ers haven't confirmed his status.
"Again, it's in the doctors' hands and they'll evaluate him as the week goes," San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said. "There seems to be some progress."
If Smith can't go, backup Colin Kaepernick will start. Harbaugh said Kaepernick was getting "a little bit more work than normal" with the first unit.
The Bears already have announced that quarterback Jay Cutler, who also suffered a concussion last week, is out. He'll be replaced by veteran Jason Campbell as the starter.
