Things with 2019 quarterback Grant Gunnell’s recruitment are starting to get more serious as the summer nears.
Over the past few weeks, between camp appearances he’s visited Arkansas, Louisville, and Oklahoma State. In the coming weeks he’s also hoping to get to Texas, but was at Florida State’s spring football game last weekend and will be at Nebraska’s this weekend.
In his his recent talk with HuskerOnline.com, he said that he would like to narrow the list of schools down to eight by the beginning of summer. Although not included in all the programs otherwise mentioned, Texas A&M continues to be the school most are connecting to Gunnell as his leader. Although he chose to catch the Seminoles’ game rather than the the Aggies, he has been in College Station recently to take in a spring practice.
IN HIS WORDS
Recapping his visit to Louisville
“It was cool, I got to hang out with Lamar Jackson,” he said. “He kept calling me tall.”
“I talk to [quarterbacks] Coach (Nick) Petrino a lot,” he said. “I don’t specifically think that I fit with what they’re doing right now, but he told me they base their offense off the quarterback so if I went there, it would be based on what I do best.”
“Coach (Tom) Herman offered me when he was at Houston, but that had been about it,” he said. “They haven’t offered me yet, they said they want to see me throw … Seeing what they did in Houston and seeing what they want to do at Texas is pretty cool to see.”
On Texas A&M
“It’s cool to see Nick Starkel running the offense because I think I’m a similar player to him,” he said. “It was also just another chance to talk to Coach (Noel) Mazzone again.”
To say that Gunnell has had a busy spring understates things as of late with his recruitment. He’s still managed to show up, compete, and impress at camp dates over the past few weeks coming off of long road trips. He’s still relatively new to quarterback, but his size and naturally clean passes excite college coaches everywhere. Once that top-eight is revealed, things will really get interesting.
