Crop comments: Gilmour hammered Kenston and North Ridgeville, each 4-0, so the Lancers continue to be No. 1 with room to spare. ... Mentor tying Twinsburg, 0-0, was a nice result, especially coming off a 3-2 defeat to Brunswick. ... Nos. 3-6 are fine the way they are, but no way around it: No. 7 through the watch list is an adventure. No side is distinguishing itself as an ascent candidate. ... West Geauga debuts after a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Chagrin Falls. With a coaching change and rough start, it's been a time of adversity in Chester Township. So kudos to the Wolverines for notching that rivalry result. ... Dropping Chagrin out of the top 10, two years removed from a state title and with a strength of schedule beyond reproach, is tough. But the Tigers lost to a previously winless side not on the watch list, then fell, 4-1, to Columbus Bexley at the Warsaw River View Labor Day Showcase. Given the wide-open nature of this season, Chagrin could wind up as a top-five Crop side when it's all said and done with its talent. But for this week, they're out. ... Kirtland leapfrogs for positive results, beating Crestwood (3-2) and tying Hawken (1-1), but also for what was not going on in that regard above the Hornets. ... Andrews Osborne and Beaumont leave the watch list for now after losses to Crestwood (4-3) and Hathaway Brown (6-3), respectively, but could be back soon.
Note: Matches considered through Sept. 4.
