Report: Isaiah Thomas signing 10-day deal with New Orleans Pelicans

Isaiah Thomas is back.

Thomas is expected to sign a 10-day deal with the New Orleans Pelicans, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported.

He is expected to make his debut on Sunday, when the team travels to Houston to take on the Rockets.

Thomas averaged 12.2 points and 3.7 assists in 40 games for the Wizards last season, his ninth in the league. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers just before the trade deadline last year, though was quickly waived and has been looking for a new home since.

The 32-year-old has averaged 18.1 points and five assists throughout his career, which included stints with the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets. He has played in just 84 games since he left the Celtics in 2017, and underwent hip surgery last year — which fixed an issue he’s had for nearly five years.

“There’s no more pain. I’ve got my full range of motion,” Thomas said in October. “For three years, I was trying to play the best players in the world on one leg. I needed help from my kids to put my socks on in the morning.

“Now, I can lift weights. I can squat low. I can work out twice a day. I’m able to cut and move and stop, able to cut and go. I feel like I’m 31 years old again. And now, I have scientific evidence to show that.”

Though he has to make it past the initial 10 days on his deal, Thomas is getting another chance at the league — and could be a useful veteran presence for the Pelicans, who need to make a solid push in the second half of the season to make the playoffs.
