Nevada cruises to district championship game

Mar. 1—Nevada handled Harrisonville on Thursday night in the Class 4 District 13 semifinals 75-56 to advance to the championship game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Pleasant Hill at Pleasant Hill High School.

That championship game pits the second-seeded Tigers against No. 1 seed St. Michael the Archangel. The two teams met Dec. 12 in the Butler Tournament, where the Guardians won 61-41.

Nevada (16-11) actually trailed after the first eight minutes of action 16-13. Harrisonville was paced in the first quarter by four 3-pointers and two from guard Dom Jackson.

The Tigers held the opposition to only two 3-pointers the rest of the way, and that defense helped to allow them to take and keep the lead.

Nevada scored 27 points in the second quarter and got 10 in that period alone from leader Jack Cheaney. Mason Majors added 8 during that quarter. It was a 40-33 advantage for Nevada at the half.

The Tigers won each quarter of the second half by 6 points to build on its halftime lead.

Cheaney led the way with 18 points despite not making a single triple like he's known to do. Brice Budd scored 17 and only made one outside shot. Kellen Braden pitched in with 12 points, and Majors with 11.
