For nearly 30 years, the Bel Air High School softball team was the only team from El Paso to play in the state tournament.
Americas High School changed that after facing off with San Antonio O'Connor in a Class 6A state semifinal on Friday, June 3, 2022, at McCombs Field in Austin, Texas. The Trailblazers lost 7-5 to the Panthers, who claimed the state championship on Saturday night.
The only other team to nearly reach the state tournament was Chapin in 2017. The Huskies lost in the Region 1-5A championship to Canyon High School.
The Trailblazers, which finished with a 35-7 record, defeated Abilene, Keller, Midland High, South Grand Prairie and Flower Mound Marcus to advance to the state tournament. The win against Flower Mound Marcus gave them the Region 1-6A championship.
