Less than a week after the Syracuse Orange men’s lacrosse team started their 2021 season with a thud, losing 18-11 to the Army Black Knights, they’ll be back in action on Saturday at 6 PM as ACC play gets underway at home against the Virginia Cavaliers. Syracuse-Virginia is almost always an exciting, down-to-the-wire game, as we’ll talk more about later. Much more important than that, though, is getting the season back on track and avoiding the dreaded 0-2 start.
The two teams traded misses to open the game with NC State taking the early 3-0 lead after freshman Cam Hayes connected on a three with just under 18 minutes to play. The Wolfpack would get out to a 5-0 advantage before Huff got a turnaround jumper to fall, but slow rotation defensively left Hayes wide open for another three. NC State built its lead to seven after Hellems hit the team’s third three in as many tries.
Looking forward, thanks to the monster win against the Cavaliers (15-5, 11-3 ACC), the Blue Devils (10-8, 8-6) boosted their NCAA tournament resume with their biggest victory of the season to keep hopes alive for a 25th consecutive bid to the Big Dance. Four of the last five games in the series have been decided by one possession. It's sad that fans were not at this game,” Krzyzewski said.
