STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- D.J. Stewart Jr. scored a career-high 23 points with five 3-pointers and coach Ben Howland secured his 500th career win and Mississippi State beat Texas State 68-51 on Monday night.
The Bulldogs (0-2) dropped a pair of games played in Melbourne, Fla., to Clemson on Wednesday and Liberty on Thursday. Forward Tolu Smith averaged 16.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games, with 20 points against Liberty. "We scheduled a very difficult schedule this year," head coach Ben Howland said.
Kyle Rode scored 18 points and Liberty knocked off its second Southeastern Conference team in three days with a 78-62 victory over South Carolina on Saturday at the Hall of Fame Classic.
