NCAA March Madness betting: Dominant Gonzaga receives huge bet to win NCAA title
Short odds on Gonzaga didn't slow down one bettor.
Gonzaga is down to +150 to win the NCAA tournament at BetMGM, a very low number for a team that still has four wins to go. The Bulldogs deserve that respect. They're undefeated and have covered two huge spreads already this tournament to advance to the Sweet 16.
BetMGM has lowered Gonzaga's odds about as far as it can, and one bettor still made a $100,000 wager on the Zags to win it all. That bet would win $150,000.
You won't see a six-figure future bet too often. It's the biggest futures bet BetMGM has taken on this year's tournament.
Big bet made on Gonzaga to win it all
Gonzaga was already BetMGM's biggest liability in the NCAA futures market, and that was before the big bet to win it all this week.
Leading up to that bet, 30.5 percent of all money bet on which team would win the NCAA title at BetMGM was on Gonzaga. That percentage is going to go way up. The Bulldogs opened as +800 to win it all and had a great season. The odds to win it all have kept getting shorter. The Bulldogs were +200 to win it all before the tournament.
Gonzaga's chances to win it all have gotten stronger. Illinois, one of the few teams that could conceivably beat Gonzaga, was upset in the second round. Gonzaga won its first two games easily and the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 seeds in the West region were knocked out.
The NCAA tournament is full of upsets. That's especially true this year. Gonzaga could be upset too, but it seems unlikely, at least before the Final Four.
Who can beat Gonzaga?
Even if you try to find value in another team to win it all, you still fear Gonzaga.
Baylor is +450 to win it all, good odds for the second-best team in the field. Michigan, the other No. 1 seed alive in the field, is an enticing +900. So is Houston, the top seed remaining in the Midwest region.
Still, can any of them beat Gonzaga? One bettor thinks that won't happen.
Gonzaga's drive to become the first undefeated NCAA champion since Indiana in 1976 has been a fantastic story in this tournament. There's a lot more on the line now, for one bettor and BetMGM too.
