Brees departed NBC after one season of working as a Sunday night analyst and color commentator for Notre Dame games. His exit was reported last month and confirmed earlier this week by NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua, who said Brees wanted to spend more time with his family in retirement.
Garrett has been working for NBC as an analyst on USFL games since April, though he apparently has not closed the door on a return to coaching.
The 56-year-old coach spent 10 seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys, accruing an 85-67 record and three playoff appearances, but never advancing past the divisional round. After his firing at the end of the 2019-20 season, Garrett worked as offensive coordinator for the New York Giants under new head coach Joe Judge, but was fired before the end of the season.
Garrett's promotion is the latest move in the most eventful broadcasting offseason in recent memory. NBC lost longtime broadcaster Al Michaels to Amazon Prime's new "Thursday Night Football" broadcasts, replacing him with Mike Tirico.
