President Joe Biden began Independence Day by sharing a message that looked to the country's future, but quickly had to respond to another mass shooting in the United States. "Jill and I are shocked by the senseless gun violence that has yet again brought grief to an American community on this Independence Day," the president said in a statement Monday after at least six people were killed in a shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, during a July Fourth parade.
The Chicago White Sox talked to Major League Baseball on Monday about postponing their game against the Minnesota Twins after a gunman opened fire on an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago, killing at least six people and wounding at least 30 others. After speaking with MLB and contact with local authorities, the game proceeded as scheduled. The postgame fireworks show was canceled, and the team observed a moment of silence before the first pitch.
CBS 2's Steven Graves reports on how people in the community helped each other, some strangers to one another, to give people shelter as they escaped the mass shooting.
