Derrick Rose with a jump shot: What Dennis Smith Jr. told Mavs in FaceTime interview before draft

"I asked him the question, 'Who does your game, who do you think your game is like?' " Carlisle said. "He said he thought that he was a bit like Derrick Rose as a stronger point guard that could slash, create or shoot the ball, make plays, those kinds of things." Finley said he heard Smith say the same thing, with a slightly different twist: "He said he was Derrick Rose with a jump shot." Now the Mavericks just have to hope that Smith resembles the Rose who played in three All-Star games from 2010 to 2012 and was NBA Most Valuable Player in 2011 -- not the injury --ravaged Rose who, at age 28, was a shell of his former self as a Knick last season. Like Rose, Smith sustained a serious knee injury.

Celtics draftee Jayson Tatum on going to a team that had the best record in the East last season: "It's great. I think that I get to learn that much more, especially from a veteran team that knows what it takes to get there. I can't wait to go and learn from Coach [Brad] Stevens and Isaiah Thomas and just everybody on that roster."
