Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau ranks defense and rebounding high on his checklist of things to do to win a basketball game — so he can appreciate a player like Detroit Pistons rookie Ausar Thompson, whose commitment both to the glass and to getting stops has positioned him well in head coach Monty Williams' rotation. The Pistons selected Thompson fifth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft as a high-energy 6-foot-6 wing out of Overtime Elite's prep-to-pro program, and he is connecting on threes at just a 12 percent clip in his first year in the league. Thompson, however, is averaging 9.3 rebounds per game and is a lockdown defender, averaging 1.6 blocks and 1.1 steals as a rookie.
Before the Houston Rockets take on the Denver Nuggets Friday night at Toyota Center, Coach Ime Udoka spoke with the media about the in-season tournament, Jalen Green and the tournament court. The one thing that stood out about the pregame press conference was an update on Amen Thompson.
The Golden State Warriors have not won a game in exactly two weeks. Then again, so is Houston! GPII will be sidelined for a second consecutive game, after injury his foot early in last Thursday's blowout loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It's a bummer since it was so good seeing him finally healthy, and his defense will be missed against a perimeter-oriented Rockets offense.
