Report: Warriors once thought Kuminga could be 'gem' of draft originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
Jonathan Kuminga's first game in the G League bubble was back on Feb. 10.
The 6-foot-8 forward registered 19 points (9-for-18 from the field), four assists, two rebounds and two blocks that afternoon in an Ignite win over the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Kuminga around that time was viewed as a prospect who could end up as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
"After Kuminga looked terrific in the G League bubble against Santa Cruz, I had a pair of conversations with high-level Warriors decision-makers," The Athletic's Anthony Slater wrote Monday. "Kuminga, both believed, was in Cade Cunningham’s ballpark and might emerge as the gem of a loaded draft class."
Fast forward to today, and the majority of mock drafts have the Congo native going outside the top five.
As a result, Kuminga absolutely could be on the board when the Warriors are on the clock at No. 7 overall (assuming they keep the pick).
So that means Golden State -- who went to Miami late last week to see Kuminga in person -- 100 percent will snag him, right?
Maybe, maybe not.
"Kuminga has plateaued as question marks regarding his offensive efficiency and approach have crept into the conversation and allowed other prospects to surpass him," ESPN's Jonathan Givony writes. "While the fit might not be ideal in terms of his ball-stopping tendencies, streaky shooting and defensive lapses, it would likely be difficult to pass on the scoring instincts, physical ability and upside Kuminga possesses at this stage of the draft."
Yours truly agrees with that assessment.
The draft is Thursday night, so we will find out very soon.
