NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Wednesday, April 21st

Yahoo Play of the Day — Jordan Clarkson: Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 33.04 | DraftKings: 35.36

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 30% | FanDuel 17% | DraftKings 16.4%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $20 | FanDuel $6,100 | DraftKings $6,600

Donovan Mitchell is out for at least two more games with his ankle injury. Clearly the Yahoo salary algorithm did not get this information, as the $20 salary for Jordan Clarkson is a good 25 to 30% discounted from where it should be for this matchup. Over its last 10 games, Houston is allowing 120 points per 100 possessions, which is the second-worst rate in the league at less than a point behind the depleted Magic.

NBA WOWY shows that in 608 minutes alongside Mitchell this year, Clarkson is averaging 0.94 Yahoo fantasy points per minute, a 25.6% usage rate and a 12.1% assist rate. Over 792 minutes without Mitchell on the court, Clarkson gets a 15% boost to 1.10 Yahoo fantasy points per minute with a 30% usage rate and a 4.2% assist rate. Tonight he should be in the mix for 30-plus fantasy points.

Stephen Curry: Golden State Warriors at Washington Wizards

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 50.11 | DraftKings: 53.74

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 18.2% | FanDuel 24.2% | DraftKings 24.4%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $50 | FanDuel $10,200 | DraftKings $10,500

With 24 teams in action tonight, there is already enough NBA DFS value picks that rolling with two or three superstars is not going to be a problem. Eric Paschall (hip) remains out for the 10th straight game, and he will be joined by Juan Toscano-Anderson (concussion), who is likely out through the weekend. Damion Lee had been picking up some extra run, though he is now questionable with a toe injury.

Over his last 10 games, Stephen Curry has been in rare form. During this stretch, he is averaging 35.5 minutes and 23.3 field-goal attempts, including 14.3 3-point attempts. Just over his last five games, Curry is averaging 16.6 3-point attempts, and if that were the only attempts he were taking, that would still land him at 31st on the season on the field-goal attempts list.

During this timeframe, Curry is averaging 40.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 0.90 combined blocks/steals for 53.5 Yahoo fantasy points per game. This is an important game in the standings for both Washington and Golden State. The 236.5 projected total is the second highest of the night, so it will be imperative to get players on both side of what is shaping up to be a spirited affair.

Russell Westbrook: Washington Wizards vs. Golden State Warriors

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 53.98 | DraftKings: 57.48

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 12.6% | FanDuel 22.8% | DraftKings 25%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $55 | FanDuel $10,800 | DraftKings $10,900

In his last 15 games, Russell Westbrook has 13 triple-doubles, missing one by a single assist and the other by five assists. Over the weekend, he passed James Harden for the league lead with 10.9 assists per game. With 26 triple-doubles in 50 games, Westbrook is one shy of matching the next two players on that list combined this year, and they have played almost twice as many games.

Good Value

Indiana Pacers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have been a bottom-five defense over their last 10 games, allowing 117.8 points per 100 possessions. Tonight Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis have already been ruled out. JaKarr Sampson will be serving a one-game suspension after being ejected in the last game. Doug McDermott, Jeremy Lamb and Goga Bitadze are all questionable. Depending on who is out among the questionable players, there should be some excellent opportunity. If Bitadze is starting, he should see 23 to 25 minutes. If he is coming off the bench, his health status will be an important factor. If he is out, then Oshae Brissett becomes a terrific option. He started the last game and played 24.7 minutes, recording 13 points and six rebounds. While he is all but assured of starting tonight, if Lamb, McDermott and/or Bitadze are out that gives him a potential path to 28 to 30 minutes at a minimum salary.

T.J. McConnell will see additional minutes filling in for a variety of players, and it will be up to Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert to carry the offensive load. Edmond Sumner is also likely to continue to start, and he is a fine discount dandy. If all three questionable players are ruled in, then things become a little more tenuous depending on what other value options appear in the other games throughout the afternoon.

Risky Value

Bojan Bogdanovic: Utah Jazz at Houston Rockets

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 24.42 | DraftKings: 26.26

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 25.2% | FanDuel 18.6% | DraftKings 8.4%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $16 | FanDuel $5.400 | DraftKings $5.900

Bojan Bogdanovic is shaping up to be one of the 20 most popular plays on FanDuel, but the Awesemo Boom/Bust tool runs completely counter to this play. He has just a 4% chance of landing in the FanDuel optimal lineup tonight. Compared to his 18.6% projected popularity, that gives him a -14.6 leverage score, which is the third worst on the slate.

There is only a 7.9% likelihood of him surpassing his boom score of 37.0 FanDuel points. Conversely, there is a 50.3% probability of him falling below his bust score of 27 FanDuel points. Bogdanovic has topped 31 FanDuel points once in his last 10 games, while he has been below 22 FanDuel points four times. Let other gamers assume the risk of a mediocre to poor performance in tournaments tonight.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy Basketball Discount Dandies

  1. Hassan Whiteside: SAC vs. MIN – $12

  2. Edmond Sumner: IND vs. OKC – $10

  3. Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid: MIN at SAC – $10

Final Thoughts on the Wednesday, April 21 NBA DFS Slate

The first nine games tip off within 90 minutes of lock, then it will be another 90 minutes before the three-game nightcap. There will be a lot of fantasy goodness available courtesy of the Timberwolves, Kings, Nuggets and Trail Blazers. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
