NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Saturday, June 12th

Yahoo Play of the Day — Paul George: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Utah Jazz

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 49.35 | DraftKings: 52.2

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 95.5% | FanDuel 93.7% | DraftKings 90.3%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $38 | FanDuel $14,000 | DraftKings $10,400

The first two games of this series were hard-fought battles, with the Jazz ultimately prevailing 112-109 and 117-111 at home. The series is now in Los Angeles, and the Clippers are favored by 4.5 points. The rest of the way, other than any games with lopsided endings, it is realistic to project Paul George for 42 to 44 minutes, and Kawhi Leonard should see 40-plus as well. With the favorable salary for George, he is going to be on the vast majority of rosters. The only real question on Yahoo is, which Star position should he slot in for a little differentiation potential?

Donovan Mitchell: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 38.37 | DraftKings: 40.52

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 75.3% | FanDuel 44.9% | DraftKings 60.3%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $39 | FanDuel $15,000 | DraftKings $11,000

Once again, Mike Conley is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, though there have been no other updates regarding his status. It is unlikely that he will play tonight, and if he does, he probably will be on a minutes restriction. With a 2-0 lead, the Jazz can take a cautious approach. Donovan Mitchell has been carrying the offense through the first two games, averaging 15.5 field goals on 29.5 attempts per game and 6.0 of 13.5 from beyond the arc. This works out to 41.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 combined blocks/steals per game. Considering he has been dealing with the defense of Leonard and George, these have been sublime performances.

Rudy Gobert: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 36.55 | DraftKings: 36.67

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 68.7% | FanDuel 55.7% | DraftKings 56.0%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $33 | FanDuel $13,500 | DraftKings $9,600

While he does not take nearly enough field-goal attempts to make his fantasy supporters happy, Gobert rarely misses and led the league with a 67.5% success rate from the field. He was second with 13.5 rebounds, which provides a steady fantasy floor, and the 2.7 blocks per game have translated mostly intact to the postseason with the increased playing time. Tonight Gobert is looking like a differentiation play, as much as one can be on a single-game slate, with a realistic shot at 40 fantasy points and attainable upside to 50 if everything goes his way.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy Basketball Discount Dandies

Denver Nuggets

  1. Joe Ingles, $15: Even if Conley plays, Ingles is still by far the best of the discounted Utah options. If Conley is out, then Ingles becomes a priority in the Flex spot.

  2. Derrick Favors: Mathematically a couple rebounds and a putback with the potential for a block or a steal in 10 to 14 minutes is a reasonable expectation. Game 2 saw none of that, with four fouls and a turnover for -1 points in 12 minutes of court time.

  3. Georges Niang, $10: Niang will get about 8 to 10 minutes and very little usage; in Game 2 he had one assist and one turnover for half a fantasy point.

Los Angeles Clippers

  1. Ivica Zubac, $10: In Game 1 Zubac came off the bench, though only 11 of his 20-ish minutes were with Rudy Gobert on the court. He started in Game 2, though barely played four minutes before being relieved by Nicolas Batum. He started the second half and played nearly nine minutes, though he stayed out for four minutes after Gobert went to the bench. Who knows how he will be employed tonight, but he should see 12 to 20 minutes, which is nice for this minimum salary.

  2. Rajon Rando, $10: From playing 28 minutes in Game 1 to not leaving the bench, this is a risky play. Though it seems like he should see 12 to 15 minutes, a lot depends on the effectiveness of Reggie Jackson.

  3. DeMarcus Cousins, $10: Cousins will be dancing somewhere between zero and 10 minutes tonight.

Final Thoughts on the Saturday, June 12 NBA DFS Slate

Have realistic expectations on the single-game slates, and while the giant tournaments are fun, the smaller-field contests can be lucrative with fewer lineup duplications. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
