NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks, Sunday, June 6

Yahoo Play of the Day — Kawhi Leonard: Los Angeles Clippers vs. Dallas Mavericks

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 49.34 | DraftKings: 50.58

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 39.2% | FanDuel 38% | DraftKings 33.8%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $45 | FanDuel $10,600 | DraftKings $9,900

There is not much left to say since there are now six postseason matchups in the books between these two squads. Today is for all the marbles, with the Clippers favored by 6 points at home. Kawhi Leonard has topped 54 Yahoo fantasy points in five of the six games, and he once again is the priority target at his $45 salary, which is a relative bargain compared to the other superstars.

Trae Young: Atlanta Hawks at Philadelphia 76ers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 42.49 | DraftKings: 45.55

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 35% | FanDuel 45.8% | DraftKings 35.6%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $41 | FanDuel $9,000 | DraftKings $9,200

Both of these teams wrapped up their first round on Wednesday, so they have had equal time to relax and refresh their bodies and minds. Joel Embiid is still the wild card, and it is hard to envision him going on Sunday; he was very limited yesterday, according to practice reports, with his “slight” meniscus tear in his right knee. The 76ers defense changes dramatically with or without Embiid, and that will have a direct impact on Trae Young. Regardless of Embiid’s status, Young is also going to have to deal with the defense of Ben Simmons and Danny Green, who will be making Young work for everything today.

Even with those scary facts laid out, Trae Young is definitely a target today. In the first round against the Knicks and their slogging approach, Young never fell below 40 fantasy points in any game. In Game 1 and Game 5 he topped 55 fantasy points. If he can do that against a Tom Thibodeau defense, then he can also to that against coach Doc Rivers, particularly with Embiid likely to sit this one out. For as much criticism and comparison to Luka Doncic as he has faced, Young has his team in the second round and the Mavericks are facing an uphill battle in an elimination game. That should put some pep in Young’s step.

Good Value

Clint Capela: Atlanta Hawks at Philadelphia 76ers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 38.86 | DraftKings: 38.49

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 43.8% | FanDuel 43.2% | DraftKings 36.6%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $31 | FanDuel $7,900 | DraftKings $7,700

There is a strong likelihood that Joel Embiid will miss today’s series opener. Even if he is able to take the court, he is likely to be well below his usual amazing level of effectiveness. That gives a strong opening for Clint Capela as a value option from a point-per-dollar perspective. While Dwight Howard is still a solid positional defender and rebounder, he will be turning 36 this offseason and may only be on the court for half the minutes that Capela plays. Anything more than 20 to 22 minutes and Howard will be exposed defensively and in the paint. After Howard it will likely be Mike Scott, Tobias Harris or even Simmons as the nominal center, which should open up rebounding and putback scoring for Capela.

Risky Value

Boban Marjanovic: Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Clippers

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Point Projections: Yahoo and FanDuel: 24.36 | DraftKings: 25.38

  • Awesemo’s Preliminary Rostered Projections: Yahoo 26.2% | FanDuel 22.6% | DraftKings 19.8%

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $20 | FanDuel $6,300 | DraftKings $5,900

There is no way that Boban Marjanovic is going under the radar after starting the last two games and playing 20 and 17 minutes with 16 and 23 fantasy points. The last game was about as perfect an outcome that could be expected, with Marjanovic getting four offense rebounds and 13 field-goal attempts. In his last 70 minutes on the court, including the regular season, he has not had a single block or steal and only two assists. Marjanovic’s popularity is likely to be off the charts today, and if he sees his minutes slip, gets into foul trouble (three fouls in each of his two starts) or if coach Rick Carlisle goes a different direction, gamers are going to be left holding the bag instead of securing the bag. In both of these games where Marjanovic started, Tyronn Lue countered by starting Nicolas Batum over center Ivica Zubac. In the last game Zubac only crossed paths with Marjanovic for three minutes, which was not the result that Carlisle was seeking with his gambit. There is definitely risk with lightning striking in Marjanovic’s favor for a third straight game.

Yahoo Daily Fantasy Basketball Discount Dandies

  1. Boban Marjanovic (if starting): DAL at LAC – $10

  2. Nicolas Batum: LAC vs. DAL – $12

  3. Seth Curry: PHI vs. ATL: – $12

Final Thoughts on the Sunday, June 6 NBA DFS Slate

There is a nice symmetry today with a Game 7 and a Game 1 which will freshen things up a bit with the new series. Keep in mind that salaries and scoring formats differ across the various fantasy sites, and a slam-dunk play on Yahoo may be a below-average NBA DFS pick on DraftKings or FanDuel.
