It's not Bryce Harper, but the Washington Nationals made their first trade ahead of Tuesday's deadline. They will reportedly send reliever Brandon Kintzler to the Chicago Cubs for Jhon Romero, according to Joel Sherman.
The Cubs have been adding to their bullpen this trade deadline, acquiring RHP Jesse Chavez from the Texas Rangers and now Kintzler. The team's closer, Brandon Morrow, has been sidelined with a bicep injury since mid-July.
Kintzler was acquired at the 2017 trade deadline by the Nationals and has been reliable ever since, posting a 3.54 ERA over 72 appearances.
He is controllable through the 2019 season and was an All-Star last season for the Twins.
Romero is a 23-year-old prospect for the Cubs' A+ affiliate, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. In 32 appearances, the righty has a 3.27 ERA and 11.7 K/9 rate.
This is likely the only move for the Nationals ahead of the deadline, as GM Mike Rizzo has said the team will keep Bryce Harper and look to compete.
