Nationals-Phillies game postponed as Washington deals with COVID-19 outbreak

The Washington Nationals’ game at Philadelphia was postponed Wednesday due to a COVID-19 outbreak, one day after shortstop Trea Turner tested positive for the coronavirus.

Major League Baseball announced the postponement about 90 minutes before the scheduled first pitch against the Phillies.

Nationals manager Davey Martinez said on a video call with news media Wednesday night that there were 12 positive tests – four of them players, including Turner.

Martinez said he thought that one of the 12 positives was an unvaccinated person.

For now, the teams will play a straight doubleheader Thursday starting at 12:05 p.m. ET.

Wednesday’s postponement marks another disruption this year for the Nationals, who had the first four games of their season postponed after a coronavirus outbreak and contact tracing concerns as spring training ended.

Trea Turner was removed from Tuesday's game after testing positive for coronavirus.

Martinez did not indicate whether Turner was vaccinated during a postgame news conference Tuesday. Turner was among a group of players flagged for contact tracing during the March-April outbreak.

The Nationals and Phillies conclude their series Thursday, Washington’s final trip to Philadelphia this season.

The Phillies have had their own coronavirus complications this season, resigned to having less than 85% of their Tier 1 personnel vaccinated. Ace Aaron Nola missed two starts after he was placed on the COVID-19 injured list around the All-Star break.
