Muscatine takes both in MAC doubleheader with Clinton

Jan. 24—CLINTON — The Clinton River Kings and Queens dropped both games of their doubleheader with Mississippi Athletic Conference foe, the Muscatine Muskies, on Tuesday night.

Threes fall in bunches as Muskies down River Queens 65-39

Early in the first quarter Muscatine set the tone, taking a 17-4 lead midway through the quarter. Their threes continued to fall and the offense could not be slowed down as they scored 34 points to Clinton's nine.

In the second the Queens once again scored nine points and the defense improved as they trailed 50-18 at halftime.

Out of the break both teams were cold to start but the Muskies continued to outscore Clinton, taking a 59-26 lead with one quarter left.

In the fourth the Queens offense began to heat up but it was too little too late as they still fell 65-39. Sophomore Carryn Sattler, who is Clinton's leading scorer, led the team once again with 16 points to highlight the night.

Clinton (3-12) will hit the road on Friday night to take on Assumption (6-9) at 7:30 p.m.

Muscatine ends on a 17-2 run to down Clinton 65-50

For the River Kings, this game was very much winnable as they showed a lot of heart and fight. After trailing by double digits for much of the first half, they battled all the way back starting with a Kade Wheatley three to close out the first half, making it 38-29 in favor of Muscatine.

Wheatley continued that offense into the third quarter, closing the deficit to just six points, 42-36. Muscatine went back up by double digits but Clinton junior Mharlo Guy brought the spark, hitting a three and then laying one in later to make it a four point game 48-44 as the third quarter ticked away.

Tayton Castle and Guy each got one to fall to start the fourth quarter and they were right back to even at 48-48. Yourd Gymnasium was alive as the River Kings looked for their first win in nearly two years.

Unfortunately, the Muskies leaned on freshman Sam Church who had 16 second half points including six in a row to instantly give Muscatine the lead back.

Church and the Muskies (2-9) closed the game on a 17-2 run to secure their second win of the season, both over Clinton, 65-50.

Guy finished the night with 13 points for Clinton while Wheatley had nine.

Clinton (0-14) will head to Assumption (8-5) on Friday night with a 6 p.m. start time.
