Mtn. Ridge tops No. 4 Southern; Bishop Walsh, Petersburg, lose

Feb. 21—OAKLAND — Behind a career-high 17 points from Cobe Penick, Mountain Ridge used a dominant second quarter to upset No. 4 Southern, 61-53, at Ram Arena Wednesday.

The Miners (13-9) ended a six-game Southern (13-7) winning streak with the win.

Leading 15-12 after the first quarter, Mountain Ridge held the Rams to just four points in the second period, scoring 15 themselves to take a 30-16 lead into halftime.

Southern outscored the Miners, 22-14, in the third period to pull within 44-38 entering the fourth, but, behind three fourth-quarter field goals from Ian Duncan, Mountain Ridge held on.

Penick scored 12 of his 17 points before halftime, shattering his previous season high of eight he scored in a loss to Allegany on Jan. 30.

Duncan and Will Patterson added 13 points each, and Owen McGeady finished with nine.

Isaiah Keller ended with 17 points to lead Southern. Keller tallied 12 in the third quarter to held get the Rams back in the game. Jared Haskiell joined him in double figures with 12 points, and Noah Wilt and Ryan Bird each tallied nine points apiece.

Mountain Ridge concludes its regular season and begins the Class 1A West Region I playoffs with a home quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Southern hosted Bishop Walsh on Wednesday and hosts Fort Hill on Thursday.

Morgantown Chr. 77, Bishop Walsh 50

CUMBERLAND — Four Mustangs scored in double figures, leading Morgantown Christian to a win over Bishop Walsh on Monday.

Lucas Valentine scored a game-high 21 points for Morgantown Christian.

Collin Lemley finished with 18 points, Tyce Day added 15 and Cade Spicer scored 10.

All of Lemley's points came from beyond the arc, hitting six 3-pointers.

Rodion Horbasenko led the Spartans (6-12) with 19 points.

David DiNola finished with 17 points while Rollins Fielding added 12.

Fielding hit four triples while Horbasenko sinked three.

The Mustangs led 25-19 after one quarter, 43-32 at halftime and 57-41 heading into the fourth.

Bishop Walsh's season came to an end against Morgantown.

Pendleton Co. 60, Petersburg 41

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — Chase Owens and Josiah Kimble combined for 40 points, leading Pendleton County to a win over Petersburg on Monday.

Owens scored a game-high 21 points for the Wildcats while Kimble scored 10 of his 19 points in the third quarter.

Caden Ours paced the Vikings (15-5) with 14 points while Kaleb Kuhn added 11.

Pendleton County led 18-12 after one quarter, 30-27 at halftime and 49-37 after three quarters. The Wildcats held the Vikings to four points in the fourth quarter.

Petersburg ends the regular season at Berkeley Springs on Thursday.
