MSU Football Burning Question: What’s considered a successful Spartans season in 2021?

What are the true expectations for the 2021 Spartans, and what would be considered a successful year? The Spartans Wire team has some thoughts on how fans should evaluate this season.

With the Michigan State 2021 season set to begin next week, the Spartans Wire staff is offering up their thoughts and insight on numerous hot topics and burning questions surrounding the team. That includes a look at what we would consider a successful season in year two of the Mel Tucker era.

Here’s what the Spartans Wire staff thinks would be a solid step forward for Michigan State this season:

Andrew Brewster

.500 record with a signature win

While I'd love to see a winning record, I think even a .500 record with a signature win would be a step forward for this program after going 2-5 last year.

Cory Linsner

Nick King/Lansing State Journal

A winning record and reaching a bowl game

Mel has yet to have a winning season as a head coach, and the excuses are running out. Tucker needs to have a winning season to make the MSU fan base feel more comfortable about this hire.

Beating Michigan and reaching a bowl game

Like Andrew and Cory, I think fans should expect this team to reach a bowl game this season thanks to the talent upgrade via the transfer portal. However, I'm going to go a bit bolder and include a victory over in-state rival Michigan as well. The Wolverines are getting more love from the media (as they always do) but I'm confident the Spartans can again knock off Michigan this year so there's nothing wrong with fans expecting to keep Paul Bunyan in East Lansing for another year.
