MARTINSVILLE — Morgan County has completed creating new district maps for the county government which will be used for the next decade beginning with 2022 elections.

During a public meeting Thursday night at the county administration building, Morgan County Commissioner Don Adams and county administrator Josh Messmer explained the process used to draw the districts for the county to conform to Indiana Code.

"I'm very pleased with the work," Adams said during the meeting

He added the county used the numbers from the 2020 United States Census for the new district lines.

"We used only the numbers and nothing else," Adams noted.

Messmer said the county is set for the next decade when it comes to elections. He said the county followed Indiana Code on setting up both the commissioner's and council districts.

Messmer said the county tried to keep the districts as compact as possible and nearly equal when it came to population.

He complimented Tom Maggard, Manager of GIS Services from Banning Engineering who Messmer said did much of the computer work.

Messmer said the county was able to decrease the number of precincts, 54 to 46, in the county.

He said some townships that may have had two precincts were reduced to one.

Morgan County Clerk Stephanie Elliott said once the commissioners approve the new districts, she will be sending voters cards informing residents of any change in their district.

She hopes to send the cards out around the beginning of 2022.

Elliott said candidates for the 2022 election will be able to sign up beginning Jan. 5.

County offices up for the election are, commissioner, four council seats, superior court II judge, auditor, clerk and assessor.

The county now uses vote centers. Instead of residents voting in their precincts, they can now vote at a vote center.

The 2022 primary election will take place on May 10, 2022.
