More scholarships available to high school athletes

Mar. 19—Four $1,000 Eric Pomeroy Memorial scholarships are now available to graduating high school athletes in Yuba, Sutter and Colusa counties who plan to attend and participate in college sports at either a community college or four-year university.

Following the sudden and tragic death of Eric Pomeroy, a former assistant superintendent for career and college readiness for the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, in October 2022, a scholarship was established in his name for area athletes looking to continue their playing careers.

Pomeroy, who Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way Executive Director Bob Harlan said was a Special Olympics swimming coach, also was the head coach and leader of a nonprofit swimming club that practiced and held events at Gauche Aquatic Park in Yuba City, called Sutter Buttes Swimming.

A former high school swimmer himself, Pomeroy previously said he became involved with the idea of starting a new local swim team after a former longtime club shut down and his children began to show interest in the sport, the Appeal previously reported.

"Probably three years ago the team just shut down," he said in February 2022. "So, the city wanted some sort of competitive swim team brought back, so we partnered and I started a nonprofit from the ground up and here we are."

Harlan said the Eric Pomeroy Memorial scholarships are a partnership between the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa United Way and the Alec Flores Youth Sports Scholarship Corporation, which recently announced similar scholarships for area athletes that are currently available.

The organization plans to award the 2024 Alec Flores Memorial Scholarship to four students. Tara Repka Flores said there will be two $2,000 scholarships and two $500 scholarships given to students who "best demonstrate an appreciation for the impact of sports in their lives, who have a continued commitment to athletics, and support making sports accessible to more youth in the future."

Similar to the Flores scholarships, the Eric Pomeroy Memorial scholarships are intended for "students who have been involved in, and give back, to their local communities in Yuba, Sutter and Colusa counties." Applicants must also have shown a passion for sports through participation and volunteerism in the community.

"The selection of the recipients for the four scholarships are better than average students who excel at their high school level in sports and are intending upon playing their sport at the college level," Harlan said in a statement.

Applications for the Eric Pomeroy Memorial scholarships will be accepted online through April 12 at https://tinyurl.com/ynpwkxee. To apply for a 2024 Alec Flores Memorial Scholarship, visit alecsportsscholarship.com/memorial.

"Students can apply through a form on our website with short essay questions," Tara Repka Flores said. "Current grades and proof of attendance at a high school within one of the eligible counties are required. Letters of recommendation are suggested, but not required. Applications will be accepted through March 31."
