More details from Jamel Dean’s contract emerge

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to make things work with the salary cap.

Some more additional details have come out about the reported four-year, $52 million deal that cornerback Jamel Dean signed on the first day of the negotiation window in March. While the deal itself is for that amount, things get a little more complicated.

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Dean’s deal includes $25.2 million in guarantees and a considerable $11.52 million bonus when Dean is on the roster of the fifth day of the league year. The contract is filled with multiple other bonuses, such as a per-game roster bonus.

There is also, as Greg Auman of FOX Sports reported, a void year in Dean’s contract. Because of this, Dean’s cap hit is very low for 2023 — he’ll only cost $3.38 million towards the cap for the upcoming season, which will likely be a big reason the Bucs can retain some free agents and sign some new ones as the offseason continues.

The Buccaneers’ “capologist”, Mike Greenberg, has certainly done his best to work around the team’s tight cap by creating contracts that allow general manager Jason Licht to do his work.
