Canadiens fans give Zdeno Chara standing ovation for 1,500th game

Sometimes a rivalry is put aside and admiration for an incredible achievement is necessary.

On Tuesday night, longtime Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara played the 1,500th game of his career against none other than the archrival Montreal Canadiens.

But during the announcement of the defenceman’s milestone, Habs fans got out of their seats and gave him a standing ovation.

Not even standing to just heckle louder, but to audibly cheer for the captain of their most hated rival. To hear them honour him this way is surprising, especially considering Chara’s violent past having a direct effect on the Montreal franchise

Players and fans alike were joining in on the recognition.

They must recognize that 1,500 games played is quite an achievement in the NHL.

With Tuesday’s game, Chara moves to sole possession of 21st all-time in games played among NHL and WHA players, passing Mike Modano. Next on the leaderboard is Steve Yzerman at 1,514.

Through his 1,500 games, Chara has scored 202 goals and has 647 points.
