The dead period has begun following what was very eventful June as Rutgers landed 10 commitments in the past month. The final one came on Friday when Coatesville (Pa.) defensive back Avery Young offered up his verbal pledge to the RU coaching staff.

"Rutgers was my No.1 school coming in,” Young said. “They have a lot of guys buying in. I love everything about Rutgers. I love the coaching staff, the players, the players that are already committed in my class. I have talked to them and it just felt like home.”

That commitment came a couple days after Calvert Hall (Towson, Md.) offensive lineman Reggie Sutton became the second offensive lineman to join RU’s 2018 class.

“When I told Coach [AJ] Blazek, he was excited. He kind of knew it was going to happen,” Sutton said. “He was really just excited for myself and my family too. When I also told Coach [Jerry] Kill, he was just excited about what I bring to the program. All the coaches are great, they all reached out to me after they found out.”

Sutton’s commitment came one day after Timber Creek defensive back Deion Jennings announced his commitment to the Scarlet Knights.

“The big thing is his versatility. He has grown a lot,” Timber Creek head coach Rob Hinson said of Jennings. “Now, he is a legitimate 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. He has cover skills but he is probably not going to play cornerback in college. He can be that safety that can come down in the box and also cover a No.2 receiver. He brings a lot of versatility. He just turned 17 last week, so I don’t think he is finished growing. So there is no telling where he is going to be.”

With 12 commits, Rutgers now has Rivals.com’s No.53-ranked class in the nation, featuring 10 three-star prospects and a pair of two-star prospects.

Things should be quiet on the recruiting front now as coach vacations are taking place while the current dead period will last until July 9th. After that, a quiet period will run through the rest of July.

The start of training camp will begin in a month and be sure to check out Scarlet Nation’s Countdown to Camp series as we preview the entire team and the upcoming season.
