When the Philadelphia Phillies added Cliff Lee(notes) back into their rotation three weeks ago, conventional wisdom had Joe Blanton(notes) getting dealt to try and lower the payroll a little bit. The Bucks County Courier Times reports that Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is happy to keep Blanton around, even if $17 million over the next two seasons is a boatload to pay for a fifth starter.
"I'm pretty comfortable with the club that we have right now," Amaro told Calkins Media, the owner of the Courier Times, Thursday. "I like our club. I think it's championship caliber as it stands today. If there are things that we can do to improve it or ways to give us some flexibility, we'll have to see if we can do it."
Amaro also noted that all he has to do now is "watch 'em play and hope that they stay healthy. Joe Blanton is part of our rotation and the guys that you see on our roster right now are part of our club. We'll see where it goes from there."
