Ranger Suárez pitched a seven-hitter, Bryce Harper homered and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Tuesday night. Suárez struck out eight and walked one in the majors' second complete game this season. It was the first shutout for a Philadelphia pitcher since Michael Lorenzen's no-hitter against Washington on Aug. 9. “Everything was working well today,” Suárez said through a translator.
Like a linebacker at the goal line, Jeff Hoffman lowered his right shoulder — his pitching shoulder — and blocked home plate. With two outs in the ninth inning of a tie game against the struggling Rockies, Hoffman skipped a slider in the dirt that got away from catcher J.T. Realmuto. The reliever raced to the plate, where he caught the ball at the same time that pinch-running Colorado pitcher Kyle Freeland arrived. After a thunderous collision that left Freeland holding his arm, a lengthy replay review, and an upheld call on the field, the game remained tied.
J.T. Realmuto expected a down-and-away slider and set up accordingly on the outer part of the plate. Instead, Yunior Marte uncorked a sinker, 98 mph and tailing in to the right-handed batter. Realizing that he and Marte got their signals crossed, Realmuto moved his mitt at the last second. It sure looked like Realmuto broke his wrist.
