Thomas Saggese, Pedro Pages save Cardinals from another shutout by powering through 9th

Well, the Cardinals got their work in Saturday. Steven Matz began the game with a swift, assertive, three-pitch strikeout and that was the high point for the Cardinals. The Mets pounced for a four-run lead, more than doubled that lead later, and then came three outs shy of becoming the latest team to shut out the Cardinals. Prospect Thomas Saggese started the scoring in the ninth with a solo homer and catcher Pedro Pages followed with a two-run shot that tidied a game that the Mets once led by nine runs.

Sonny Gray leaves start abruptly with hamstring issue; Cardinals shut out, offense scarce

Twenty pitches and gobs of groundballs into his scheduled start, Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray was greeted at the mound by his catcher, an athletic trainer and, soon, his manager. Gray is scheduled for an MRI Monday afternoon to determine the severity, manager Oliver Marmol said. The Cardinals will have a better sense of his situation and their level of concern after the doctor's review. Gray declined comment, telling a team official he wanted to know more about the injury before talking to the media.

Why the Cardinals feel they need to be deliberate with Steven Matz this spring

Cardinals starter Steven Matz was the left-hander standing on the mound, not in Roger Dean Stadium but on Field 1 in the club's training facility. While veteran pitcher and offseason free-agent addition Kyle Gibson started his first Grapefruit League game for the Cardinals in front of fans at Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday, the Cardinals continued with a very methodical approach to Matz's spring training.
