To the rescue came Tyler Alexander. On a sultry night at TD Ballpark when Tigers pitchers walked 12 batters - and when the Blue Jays left 19 men on base in a game in which they somehow scored but a single run – the Tigers could thank Alexander for bringing sanity to a zany Grapefruit League game the Tigers supposedly won, 4-1. Alexander countered all the later nonsense, lowlighted by Tigers relievers walking 10 Jays hitters in the final four innings, with three innings of perfect, nine-up, nine-down artistry spanning 34 pitches.
One slice of roster anxiety a front office and manager are thrilled to avoid is catcher. Jake Rogers is treating Tigers front-office chief Scott Harris and team skipper AJ Hinch to less stress about their catching at the end of spring camp. Nice assurance there when Rogers hasn't played in a big-league game since 2021, all due to Tommy John surgery. “I think he's been great on two fronts,” Hinch said Saturday as the Tigers got ready for an evening game against the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark.
Joey Wentz was pitching too well this spring to keep him down long anyway. In the end, an injury to right-hander Michael Lorenzen left an opening for at least the first turn through the Detroit Tigers' starting rotation. On Friday, manager A.J. Hinch announced that Wentz will break camp with the major league club for the first time. There isn't a specific timetable yet for Lorenzen, and recovery from a groin strain is hard to forecast.
