Cardinals roster riddled by more injuries: Matt Carpenter on IL, Willson Contreras bruised

Shortly after suggesting that they did not need to bring up a backup catcher as insurance due to Willson Contreras' bruised hand and questionable availability for a few days, the Cardinals did exactly that. Pedro Pages, a gifted defensive catcher, joined the major-league roster shortly before the Cardinals' regular-season home opener Thursday at Busch Stadium. To create room on the active roster for Pages, the Cardinals placed veteran infielder and designated hitter Matt Carpenter on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain. It is not clear specifically when Carpenter experienced the injury, though he did not appear in the series finale in San Diego on Wednesday.

Cardinals' Matt Carpenter gets 100% real on regrets from first St. Louis stint

Matt Carpenter is back with the St. Louis Cardinals, and he's hoping to play a role in helping them turn things around after a horrific 2023 campaign. While Carpenter had only been gone for two years, it's clear he's happy to be back with St. Louis. Carpenter turned himself into a key piece of the Cardinals during the 2010s, earning three All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger award in 2013. Look, in my eyes, I had dreams of running the table in St. Louis — playing my whole career here, finishing on a good note, playing out that contract, positively.
