As Orioles seek starting pitching, Kyle Bradish and DL Hall believe they can compete for rotation spots

It’s in that new facility the young left-handed Orioles pitcher is working in to force his way into the Baltimore rotation, learning from the experiences of his one start and a longer stint in the bullpen last season as he pushes for an even larger role next year. On the other side of the country, right-hander Kyle Bradish is in Arizona at Push Performance.

Orioles free agent target: Chris Bassitt

Bassitt will be 34 years old when the 2023 season rolls around. He has played eight seasons in the majors, starting with the White Sox in 2014, then spending six years with the Athletics before a trade to the Mets prior to last season. Since 2019, he has thrown 140+ innings in a season three times, never posted an ERA+ of worse than 113, been to an All-Star Game (2021), and finished in the top 10 of Cy Young voting twice (2020 & ‘21).

With a focus on his changeup, left-hander Drew Rom hopes to make his case for an Orioles debut

So instead, as Rom makes a push toward a major league debut in Baltimore, he’s focused on adding some velocity — just enough to have him sit in the mid-90s — while perfecting his changeup. It’s the latter pitch, Rom believes, that could make his fastball feel faster and leave batters off balance. It worked in Triple-A Norfolk, where he tinkered with the grip and found a rhythm with that pitch after his late-season promotion.
