The Diamondbacks declined contract options for next year on a trio of right-handers -- starter Mike Leake and relievers Hector Rondon and Junior Guerra -- and left undecided the status on Merrill Kelly, the sort of non-decision that likely means his 2021 option eventually will be exercised. The decision on Leake was the most obvious -- and one that had been anticipated since the Diamondbacks acquired him at the trade deadline in July 2019.
He only saw significant playing time in the first two years of the contract. And while the hitting was reasonable - in particular, the power, with 40 home-runs over 258 games - that was more than undone by the defensive ineptitude that he showed. In the final three years of his contract, Tomas was almost entirely confined to the minor-leagues.
The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the 2020 season considered by some to be a possible World Series contender. They won't have to worry about that in 2021 after a 25-35 record in 2020. Early MLB power rankings were released for the 2021 season after the Los Angeles' Dodgers took home the World Series title on Tuesday night and you have to scroll down a while to find the Diamondbacks.
