    The Cubs dedicate a headstone for 19th-Century star Jimmy Ryan

    Among those in attendance were Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney, Cubs Historian Ed Hartig, and several members of the family of Elizabeth Finn Ryan, Jimmy’s widow. Jimmy Ryan died in 1923, Elizabeth in 1959, she lies beside her husband. Speaking at the ceremony were Kenney, Hartig, and Barb Del Carlo, Ryan’s great-grandniece, who acted as family spokesperson.

    The Chicago Cubs have been consistently linked to the top free agent shortstops, and more fuel was added to the fire when the New York Post's Jon Heyman tabbed the Cubs as the favorite to sign former Atlanta Brave Dansby Swanson. Heyman did not give a specific reason why he believed that Chicago was the current favorite, but did note that some in Atlanta are pessimistic about their chances of re-signing the Georgia native.

    José Cardenal is no longer a household name, but in Chicago during the mid-1970s, he was a superstar. On Dec. 3, 1971, the Milwaukee Brewers traded him to the Chicago Cubs for a package of prospects including Jim Colborn. Had Colborn not panned, the trade would have been a 3-for-1 Cubs fleecing.
