The Cleveland Guardians have promoted Joe Torres to assistant pitching coach on manager Terry Francona’s staff. Torres spent the past two seasons as the Guardians’ minor league pitching coordinator. The 39-year-old has been credited in helping with the development of several of the club’s top young pitchers.
On Jan. 19, 1961, longtime Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe was released by the Cleveland Indians, marking the end of his 10-year MLB career. Newcombe spent parts of his first eight seasons with the Dodgers after signing with the organization in 1944. He missed the 1952 and 1953 seasons while serving in the Korean War.
