Emmanuel Rivera homered and hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to help blow open a close game, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-3 on Thursday. Rivera started the season with Kansas City before being traded to Arizona at the deadline for right-hander Luke Weaver. Rivera, who homered in his third game with the Diamondbacks, added a solo shot off JR Brubaker in the fourth inning Thursday.
The last time Merrill Kelly couldn’t make it through 5 innings was all the way back in June against this same Pirates team when Kelly only managed 5 innings with 89 pitches. Since then? starts, averaging 6 2/3rds innings a game with an ERA of 2.21.
It started with right-hander Chase De Jong on the mound, trying to get through his second inning of work and cling to a 3-2 lead. Spoiler alert: He didn’t. De Jong allowed a pair of singles to start the frame, then Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo tried to bunt.
