SF Giants: Catcher Roberto Pérez makes Opening Day roster

Roberto Pérez sported a big grin as he packed up his black-and-orange bag full of catcher's equipment Saturday afternoon. The selection of Pérez likely means fellow non-roster catcher Austin Wynns or third-year catcher Joey Bart will be the odd man out in the four-way competition. The Giants have strongly indicated they plan to enter the season with three catchers, with Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol serving in a hybrid outfield role in addition to third-string catching duties. Pérez would have been able to become a free agent on Monday if he hadn't been added to the Giants' roster by then.

Mariners drop pair of split-squad games, baseball is hard

Today the Mariners played two games at the same time, with roughly the same caliber of lineup for each squad; the main difference was between pitchers. On ROOT Sports, facing the Diamondbacks, the seasoned former Cy Young winner, Robbie Ray; on a shaky MLB TV stream from the Giants which eventually just gave up and became an audio stream, the young prospect Bryce Miller. Miller is very good, and very close to making the big leagues, but today's games illustrated how large that gap can be between being close to the bigs and being there. Miller came out strong in the first inning; LaMonte Wade Jr. started off the game with a bunt single against him but he then punched out Thairo Estrada looking and Michael Conforto swinging, and got some help via a nifty play from shortstop Mason McCoy to end the inning.

A look at Logan Webb, the first starter the Yankees will face in 2023

The San Francisco Giants were one of the first teams to name their Opening Day starter for the 2023 season, and in doing so surprised no one, handing Logan Webb that duty. With the Yankees on the schedule for the first series of the year, it's as good a time as any to cover the first pitcher Aaron Judge and company will face in 2023. Webb will face the club responsible for ensuring him this Opening Day opportunity. Not that the right-hander isn't a worthy name to take the bump on the first game or the season, but the Yanks poaching away Carlos Rodón from San Francisco certainly had something to do with it.
