Hall, Hoskins homer, lead Phillies past Arenado, Cardinals

Darick Hall’s tiebreaking home run was his third homer since being called up, and Rhys Hoskins went deep to add an insurance run, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-3 win over Nolan Arenado and the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Hall broke a 3-all tie in the sixth when he led off by driving a 79-mph changeup from Miles Mikolas (5-6) into the seats in right. The 26-year-old Hall went deep twice in Philadelphia’s 14-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night.

Homegrown talent and the bullpen carry the Phillies in Game 1 of a key series against the Cardinals

Pittsburgh’s Rodolfo Castro homered for his first five hits last season; the Phillies’ Ed Sanicki’s first three hits were homers in 1949. The Phillies called up Hall from triple-A Lehigh Valley this week to add left-handed power to the lineup during a stretch in which they’re facing mostly right-handed starting pitchers. Hall has had four 20-homer seasons in his minor league career and was leading the International League this season with 20 homers.

Phillies' Darick Hall basking in afterglow of hitting two homers for his first MLB hits

Hall made his major league debut Wednesday night — and batted cleanup, no less — after getting called up by the Phillies. The next night, he got his first two hits — both home runs — and lived out a lifelong dream at Citizens Bank Park. I called my wife [Thursday] in the middle of the day, and I’m like, ‘I feel like we haven’t talked for two days,’ because so much stuff’s been going on,” Hall said before the Phillies opened a pivotal three-game series at home against the St. Louis Cardinals.
