Bogaerts homers, Carpenter, Wacha help Padres beat Rockies

Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and Matt Carpenter added a two-run double to back fellow newcomer Michael Wacha and lead the San Diego Padres to their first victory this season, 8-4 against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Petco Park was already in a festive mood after the crowd erupted in cheers while watching San Diego State beat Florida Atlantic 72-71 in the Final Four, with Lamont Butler's buzzer-beater coming just a few minutes before first pitch.

C.J. Cron hits third homer but Rockies pitchers issue eight walks in loss to Padres

The Rockies tried to overcome a brief, erratic performance from starter Jose Urena on Saturday night at Petco Park. Despite a three-run, sixth-inning rally powered by an RBI double by Charlie Blackmon, followed up by a two-run homer by C.J. Cron, the Rockies lost, 8-4, to the Padres. The Padres were gifted two walks and a wild pitch by Dinelson Lamet and converted on Juan Soto's two-run, two-out single.

Rockies' Austin Gomber counting on two-seamer to sink opponents

Austin Gomber is not a grip-it-and-rip-it pitcher. The Rockies' southpaw utilizes a plus changeup and an effective curveball to confound hitters. “I felt like hitters were starting to sit on my off-speed stuff, so we thought, how can I make my fastball more effective?” said Gomber, who'll make his first start of the season Sunday against the Padres at Petco Park. Last season, when Gomber was relegated to the bullpen for part of the season, his four-seamer was often an ineffective pitch.
