Jake McCarthy's 2-run homer helps carry the Diamondbacks to a 9-3 win against the Padres

Jake McCarthy's two-run homer capped a six-run second inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 9-3 on Sunday to salvage a split of their four-game series. McCarthy and Kevin Newman each had three of Arizona's 15 hits as the Diamondbacks rebounded after losing 10-3 and 13-1 on consecutive nights. The reigning NL champions, who won the series opener 4-3 on Thursday night, have won six of nine, while the Padres have lost six of eight.

Tommy Henry With Another Shot as Pitching Instability Claims New Victim

Earlier today, the Diamondbacks recalled left-hander Tommy Henry from Triple-A Reno. In a corresponding move, left-hander Logan Allen, the mop-up reliever was designated for assignment. Henry will pitch bulk innings in today's matchup with the San Diego Padres, the final game of a four-game set at Petco Park. Henry hasn't fared all that well in 2024--at least not in the majors.

Scott McGough to start for D-backs; Tommy Henry recalled

Manager Torey Lovullo said Scott McGough will start Sunday for the Arizona Diamondbacks in San Diego against the Padres. Lovullo told reporters the decision after the loss on Saturday night, alluding to an incoming roster move to shore up the bullpen behind McGough. McGough was recalled from Reno on Saturday, when he threw 11 pitches to get through the three batters he faced, including one strikeout, in a clean seventh inning.
