Spring training baseball is back, which means we’re due for the latest baseball-meets-wildlife encounter. Now, when it comes to Cactus League baseball in Arizona, those encounters often consist of a bunch of bees interrupting games. But, thankfully, Sunday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks did not involve bees.
In Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Cubs, Soria issued just one walk and no hits over the course of the fourth inning. The veteran said it was good to be back on the bump, especially with fans in the stands, but added that he wants to continue working on his fastball pitch. Today, my command wasn’t as good as I would like but I know that I will get there,” Soria told reporters via Zoom.
The club has been playing in front of crowds of around 2,100 at Salt River Fields this spring. Get to work Right-hander Joakim Soria, the odds-on favorite to win the closer’s job this spring, made his first Cactus League appearance of the year on Sunday, working around a walk to complete a scoreless inning. Like many veteran relievers, Soria said he doesn’t tend to need a lot of outings in spring training to prepare for the season.
