Toronto-born baseball star Joey Votto takes a swing at chess in his hometown

If you ask George Supol what he thinks about six-time MLB All-Star Joey Votto, he'll tell you he's got a great attitude and serves as a positive role model, especially for younger players. The Cincinnati Reds' first baseman has been coming to the Annex Chess Club (ACC), just north of Bathurst and Bloor streets, every week for a few months now, according to Supol. “The reaction has been very positive,” the ACC director told CTV News Toronto in an email. News of Votto's presence at the local chess club was no secret, though.

Ricky Skaggs Is Proud to Bring the Kentucky Thunder

Unless, that is, it sits on the snow white dome of Cordell, Kentucky, native Ricky Skaggs, who's proudly kept the bluegrass fire burning for more than four decades. The 15-time Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame mandolin master began playing in bluegrass legend Bill Monroe's band when he was still in first grade, before joining Ralph Stanley's band and going on to play with everyone from Emmylou Harris to Bruce Hornsby to Jack White. Along the way, he's landed 12 No. 1 songs on the country charts and been inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, National Fiddler Hall of Fame, and Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame and received the National Medal of Arts in 2020.
