Mariners manager Scott Servais makes sure his players know that. It might be against a hitter's nature to take a corner-painting strike in a 3-1 count, but if it's not in the “damage zone,” as Servais said, Scott would prefer they don't swing. Patience has been a necessity for Seattle's new designated hitter. You need it when you're nursing an injury, which Garver — who's never played more than 102 games in his seven-year MLB career — has done far too often.
With a large group of their regular position players playing in Las Vegas against the Oakland A's, the Brewers rolled out a group of younger players to face Luis Castillo. The Mariners' ace carved them up, pitching four innings and allowing two hits — one of them a double that Dominic Canzone lost in the sun — with four strikeouts. “I just went out there and attacked the zone,” Castillo said through interpreter Freddy Llanos. Seattle provided Castillo plenty of run support.
