Report: Giants pick Crawford agrees to slightly below-slot deal originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

The Giants officially have added to their prospect pool, as they have agreed to a contract with their 2022 first round pick Reggie Crawford.

On Thursday, MLB.com's Jim Callis reported that San Francisco signed the two-way player to a signing bonus slightly under slot value. The money that a player selected 30th overall can sign for either over or under $2,486,800.

Meanwhile, Crawford and the Giants settled on $2,297,500, allowing the team to allocate the money saved and use it to pay a higher signing bonus than the slot value allotted for another one of their draft picks.

Sure enough, Callis reported that the Giants went well above slot with their second-round pick Carson Whisenhunt.

The Giants later announced they had signed 17 of their 20 picks.

Selecting the 21-year-old Crawford is a gamble San Francisco is taking, considering he missed the 2021 season due to Tommy John surgery. Before the injury, Crawford was slated to go in the upper first round.

The former UConn star possesses a fastball that reaches 100 mph, a mid-80s slider in limited mound time, and has some power at the plate as well. Furthermore, the Giants will allow Crawford to hit this summer to see if he could possibly do both in the minor leagues.

"I'm really happy and really thankful that they are willing to let me try it out and it's one of those things that whatever works, works and whatever doesn't, doesn't and you have to live in reality about it," Crawford said. "Initially, I am so thankful that they are allowing me to do both."

Following the 2022 MLB Draft, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter ranked the Giants as having the 13th best farm system in baseball, with Crawford as their eighth-best prospect.
