The Cubs and Tigers met on the field this week and one rumor has them connected off of it.
Maybin, 33, is hitting .256/.310/.436 in 13 games (39 at-bats) this season, including a 4-for-7 stretch against the Cubs this week. He's spent all of his time defensively in right field this season but has experience playing left and center.
The Cubs have outfielders Jason Heyward, Ian Happ, Albert Almora Jr., Kyle Schwarber and Steven Souza Jr. on their roster, and Kris Bryant can play out there as well. Along with his versatile defense, Maybin would offer another right-handed bat to the group.
MLB's trade deadline is Monday and with the unique circumstances of the 2020 season, teams have more to consider with trades than normal years. The financial aspect cannot be ignored, with teams experiencing losses due to COVID-19 and next season's financial outlook being uncertain.
Maybin signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with Detroit last offseason, which is worth around $555,000 after proration. With this season nearing the halfway mark, he's owed around $250,000 the rest of the way.
