The Boston Red Sox placed All-Star left-hander Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list due to mild left shoulder inflammation, the team announced on Tuesday.

"We think it's a short time period," Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said of Sale's projected absence. "He just said it's really been more mounting. It's been something that's bothered him a little bit."

Sale, 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA in 22 starts this season, led the majors in strikeouts (207) and the AL in ERA entering Tuesday. The seven-time All-Star, who is 5-0 with an 0.23 ERA in his past six starts, hasn't allowed a homer in his past 63 innings and hasn't allowed a run in his past three starts.

Right-handed reliever Brandon Workman was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill out the 25-man roster. In 21 appearances this season, Workman is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA and is holding opponents to a .217 batting average.

--On the heels of Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish's agent ripping ESPN analyst Alex Rodriguez for comments made during Sunday night's national broadcast, Darvish and the Cubs received some good news.

The right-hander, who is on the disabled list and hasn't pitched since May 20 due to right triceps tendinitis, threw 35 pain-free pitches during a bullpen session.

"For the first time in two months, I felt nothing from the first pitch, playing catch, to the last (pitch in the) bullpen session," Darvish said through his interpreter, according to MLB.com. "This is the actual starting point. I need to build up the self-confidence from this point on. ... I'm really excited because there was no pain."

--The New York Yankees sent home starting pitcher J.A. Happ after the newly acquired left-hander contracted a mild case of hand, foot and mouth disease, general manager Brian Cashman said.

The 35-year-old Happ has been with the Yankees for just five days since being dealt from Toronto on July 26. He has started once for his new team, defeating the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. For the season, he is 11-6 with a 4.05 ERA.

Happ is the second prominent big league pitcher in New York to recently come down with the ailment. New York Mets star Noah Syndergaard was placed on the disabled list last week after also being diagnosed with the viral disease, which is more common in children.

--Oakland A's right-hander Daniel Gossett will undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, according to multiple media outlets.

The team announced that Dr. Keith Meister examined Gossett in Arlington, Texas, and recommended that the pitcher have his right ulnar collateral ligament repaired.

The 25-year-old was 0-3 with a 5.18 ERA in 24 1/3 innings this season. He will be the fourth A's starting pitcher to have Tommy John surgery this season, joining Opening Day hurler Kendall Graveman, Jharel Cotton and prospect A.J. Puk.
